A One In a MILlion Interview with Mil Savich

Today our friend Mil Savich released his new single “Pin High”, which is now streaming everywhere! Mil was kind enough to take some time to answer some questions about his approach to writing, influences, and even what cryptid he thinks would vibe most with his music!

Q) How would you best describe your solo music?

A) Genre wise, I usually just tell people that I play, “rock” music. It’s vague but I don’t always like to dive into the minutiae of what constitutes as specific genres. In general I play guitar driven music with fairly traditional pop structures. I grew up on pop punk and skate punk and I really love a lot of ‘90’s alternative and emo music. I’ve been told my songs sound like mash up of blink-182 and Oasis and I would say that’s a good way to describe it.

How is your approach different when writing your own music versus when you’re writing with one of your bands?

When I’m writing for one of the bands I play in, I usually approach songs with a general idea of what sonic world they’re going to live in but with an open mindedness for change, because it is a collaboration between me and others. While I do have a general sound for the music I release under my own name, I don’t really have to please anyone else besides me.

Q)Many aspiring solo artists find it hard to step out of their comfort zone and be vulnerable without a band to “hide behind”. What is the best piece of advice you can give someone who is looking to take that step?

A)Well, to be 100% honest, I never really wanted to be a, “solo” artist. I love being a part of a band. I love the things that come with it. But sometimes it can be hard to find other people who agree with the same musical vision you have. Aside from that, I work at a very high volume. Sometimes it’s hard to find people who are as obsessed with making music, to be blunt.

My advice would be to make music that you love because you want to make it and be authentic and unapologetically yourself. When I’m attaching my name to my music, it’s all very reflective of who I am and what I want to create and put out in the world. I bare that responsibility seriously and encourage others to go after whatever it is they want to accomplish with that same mentality.

Q) What bands or solo artists most inspire you when writing your own music?

A) I love an album that flows front to back. Track lists are something I study fairly regularly. I’m always listening to artists that make great records. So for me, that could be solo artists with a different vibe than me like Mac Miller or John Mayer, or often times bands that I very clearly pull my sound form like Jimmy Eat World or old Foo Fighters records. There’s something very inspiring to me about the entire package of a great record and what comes along with that. It’s the project as a whole that I want to build from the ground up.

Q) For almost a year now we’ve Strange Darkness has been posting “Daily Recs” or songs that we feel like may not reach the average listeners ears. What are three songs you would recommend that most people have probably never heard?

A) 1. Gameface - “Laughable”

2. Farside - “Statues of Snow”

3. Summercamp - “Drawer”

Q) What's the STRANGEST Lyric you have ever heard?

A) Literally anything by Action Bronson. For an example, just check out the track, “Irishman Freestyle”. It’s awesome, it’s both strange and wonderful.

Q)What is an underrated movie or album that people should know about?

If you’re into punk or emo, I’d recommend the record, “Every Last Time” by Gameface. It’s one of my favorite records. It’s a nice end cap to a lot of the awesome 90’s emo albums that sort swerve into the pop punk lane. I feel like no one ever talks about this band, but I really like them a lot. It’s an easy listen if you’re into that sort of thing.

Q) What Cryptid do you think would vibe with your music the most?

A) I’ll say that I generally have spent much more time researching UFO’s and UAP’s

s than I have on Cryptids. Until recently, most of my knowledge was based on nuggets from X-Files episodes. But recently I’ve been reading more about big foot and have been interested in sightings and things of that nature. In a way, I suppose that’s parallel with me playing in bands most of my life and now branching out and doing solo work.

Q) What is your favorite movie soundtrack?

A) I was a big soundtrack guy growing up (when those were still a thing you purchased on cassette or CD) and there’s a ton of great ones. But for my money, I’ll say the American Pie 2 soundtrack. Mostly because it sounds like a mixtape I would’ve made back in the day. Still a lot of my favorite bands show up on those soundtracks but the second movie in particular offers a strong selection.

Q) Where can our followers find you and your music?

A) You can find my music on all streaming platforms under my name, Mil Savich. You can follow me on Instagram @milsavich, Twitter/X @mil182 and YouTube under my name.

We would like to give a big shout out to Mil for taking the time to answer our dumb questions, and for being a supporter of us from the beginning! Please take a moment to check out his new music, and follow his socials to stay up to date on his numerous projects!
